Here is the next session of the Primeval RPG campaign featuring the Friday night gaming group. This session dates back to January 20th, 2012. You can read about the previous session of the game in this journal entry . This post is somewhat long, and I've put it behind a cut so that folks who don't want to read any detailed rpg posts don't have to. Thirteenth Session Sunday, April 8th, 2007 As the ostrich-like creature charges at Harrison Williams (David) and Jenny Hansford (Joanne), the latter is paralysed with fear. Seeing this, Harrison lures the creature towards him, and strikes it with one of the 2 x 4s that he snatches up. The creature is momentarily stunned, and the two seek cover inside the under construction annex. The ostrich-like beast attempts to pursue them, but is too large to do so. In anger, it squawks at them. Meanwhile, Amanda Tarrascon (Kathy) and Captain Alexander Taylor (Tom) debate what to do, while they do a bit of a recce in the area, although Amanda's thoughts are towards the injured creature. Amanda tells Alexander that the creature looks to be a Triceratops, but is smaller, and the head fringe is somewhat different; she thinks it might be a Torosaurus. The two have a minor argument about what to do with the creature, although they have different thoughts about the Torosaurus and the ostrich-like beastie. They are interrupted as David Bannister (Nick) and Christine Johnson, accompanied by the SAS soldier, Donnelly, arrive on the scene. Christine is terrified by the creature's sheer size, but Amanda assures her that it's a herbivore. When Christine sees the Anomaly she's even more flabbergasted, but she tells David that she understands what he means now. Amanda tells David that his patient is the Torosaur, and he sees the wounds on the creature. Cautiously, Amanda, David, and Christine approach the creature, while Alexander keeps an eye out for anything that might threaten them. Jessica Ransome (Angela) and Kathy Blaine talk some more, and Kathy learns from Private Dommanis some of the problems that have faced the Home Office team since the creatures first started showing up. Kathy says she understands the fascination that these creatures have for Amanda, but states that she's worried about her friend. Jessica assures her that Amanda is an important member of the team, and that Alexander isn't going to let any harm come to her. Jessica says they need to call in another Home Office team to deal with the bodies of the two elderly people, and Dommanis radios Alexander for further instructions. Alexander talks to Dommanis, and is told to go ahead and make the call to the Home office, and then get back to him. Having calmed the Torosaurus down, Amanda keeps the beastie in a good state of mind while David and Christine examine the wounds. He shows the wounds to Amanda, who states some kind of large theropod attacked it as evidenced by the vicious claw wounds, and several deep bite wounds. Alexander comes over to the three characters and David tells him they can treat the dinosaur, but it will take time. Back at the annex, the ostrich-like creature attempts to get into the structure to get at Harrison and Jenny, but to no avail. To their horror, they watch as a small girl and her grandmother walk towards them, oblivious to the danger. As the ostrich creature turns its attention to them, Jenny and Harrison realise they have no choice, and Harrison races at the creature, shouting and waving a 2 x 4 at it, Jenny following in his wake. Threatened by the humans, the ostrich-like beast attacks Harrison, but he is able to hold it off as Jenny reaches the grandmother and child. Harrison gets in a lucky blow [he spent 3 Story Points], but the creature does not retreat. As it turns back towards the grandmother and child, Private Trainor arrives on the scene. He opens fire at the creature, and seriously wounds the ostrich-like creature, forcing it to flee. The creature retreats around the annex structure for the moment. Alexander asks David and Amanda whether they can heal the Torosaurus, and Amanda says that they're doing their best. Alexander says he's got to get back to where he left Dommanis, Jessica, and Kathy Blaine, as he needs to be there when the reinforcements arrive. They tell him they can handle themselves, although Christine looks far from reassured in this matter. Alexander departs at a brisk trot. As they continue to work on the Torosaurus, David, Amanda, and Christine talk about the whole nusiness of the Anomalies and the creatures they spew out. Christine asks David if they've been through an Anomaly to see what's on the other side, but he replies they haven't; it's too dangerous, and who knows what might happen. Amanda says they haven't, but she adds that she really wants to go through one of the Anomalies, as she's definitely curious about it. Before they can talk any more, three small (around 1.5 metres long) versions of the ostrich-like creatures come through the Anomaly. They approach the player characters and Christine menacingly. Alexander arrives back at the place where he left Dommanis with Jessica and Kathy. He gets a status report from Dommanis, and then tells Jessica what's been going on. She says that she feels useless here in the field, and that she needs to go back to the main Feldenham retirement home building, as she can do so much more for the team there. He agrees with her, and says that she should take Kathy back there with her. Alexander instructs Dommanis to escort the two women back to the main retirement home building, and then to return immediately to him here. He realises that he hasn't heard from Private Trainor in a while, and decides to make a call there. Before he can do so, one of the ostrich-like creatures charges at them, heading straight for Jessica! Harrison and Jenny approach the grandmother and young girl, who introduces herself as Olivia Hamilton (Ellie), and her grandma, Trisha. Olivia is excited about what she saw, and asks them if that was a dinosaur. When Harrison and Jenny are somewhat evasive, the girl takes this as proof that it was a dinosaur, and becomes more excited. Harrison tells Jenny and Trainor to escort to the two people back to the main Feldenham building, but Trainor objects, saying that he has to call Captain Taylor first. Jenny convinces him that their first duty is to the civilians, and Trainor acquiesces on this point. When he asks Harrison what he plans to do, the wilderness guide says that he plans to go after the creature. "Without a weapon?" Trainor asks, an odd tone to his voice. "I'll improvise the best I can," Harrison reassures him. Jenny and Trainor take Tina and Olivia in hand, and lead them calmly back to the main Feldenham building, all the while Jenny having to explain to Olivia that she can't answer any of her questions. This game session of the Primeval RPG with the Friday gaming group was pretty enjoyable, as per usual, and the adventure is coming along quite nicely. While I'm having a good time running the game, to be honest, I've been a bit down about it of late, given that the game still isn't out from the publisher, and I really dislike running games with PDFs in front of me; I much prefer a paper book to reference when I run a game, not a laptop! That said, the players are having a good time of it, and their characters are just so "right" gaming-wise for this rpg. The game mechanics and the tweaks to it really are a good choice for the setting based on the tv series, and you can't go wrong with that. I'm enjoying the run of the Primeval RPG that I'm doing with both the Friday and Sunday gaming groups, but to be honest, can't wait for the actual rulebook to come out!
