Had a good time last night with the Friday night gamers. The gaming group re-started (or should that be continued?) their game of the Abney Park's Airship Pirates post-apocalyptic steampunk rpg. Here's the session report for last night's game. You can read about the previous game session in this journal entry (and about the game session the previous week of revised character creation in this journal entry). Since this post is quite long, I've put it behind a cut for those who don't want to read about the roleplaying game campaigns that I'm running.
Lady Emily Harrington-Boothe (Kathy Bauer) - Neovictorian Lady
Haley Deuce (Angela Marsh) - Neovictorian Automaton Doll
Arthur Quentin-Smythe (David Matchuk) - Neovictorian Dilettante

The players begin the game session with a quick refresher on the world of the Abney Park's Airship Pirates Roleplaying Game, the basic mechanics, and a couple of quick sample combats to get the juices flowing again.
The game session begins some three months after the events of the previous adventure, with the Bountiful Queen docked on her home Skyloft of Sanctum. The player characters are sitting comfortably in their favourite drinking hole, The Good Spirits. Emily Harrington-Boothe is lamenting the departure two months prior of her potential beau, Andrew Hartwell, but Arthur Quentin-Smythe tells her that she's better off without him. He was a womaniser, after all, he points out, but Emily says that's besides the point. She liked him, despite the way he treated her, but it's all wind in the breeze now. Haley Deuce is attracting the attention of several regulars of the place, but she's not in the mood for any hanky panky, and tells them so.
Back on the Bountiful Queen, First Mate Henry "the Axe" James tracks down new air sailor Calliandra ("Calli") Shade, and asks if she knows where Emily, Haley, and Arthur have gone. When she tells him where they've gone, the Axe asks her to go and round them up, as Captain Stormfist has a new cargo to drop off with a customer. He gives her a Helios, and sends her on her way.
The newest member of the Bountiful's crew, Rich Wilson Sequoia, enjoys one of the Good Spirits' more interesting brews, sitting on his own in a corner of the tavern. Observing the Skyfolk present in the tavern, he spots the two fellows who propositioned Haley Deuce, and overhears them plotting to kidnap her. He takes exception to this, as he knows her as part of the crew of his new ship, and approaches them. The two men, Samuel Windsprite and Jason Bluestratus, take exception to his insinuation, and a brawl erupts in the tavern.
Recognising Sequoia as the newest member of the crew, Emily and Arthur shrug at one another, and the rest of the player characters leap into the minor squabble along with the rest of the patrons of the tavern. Sequoia is barely able to hold his own against the two men until Arthur lends him a hand, while Emily wades in with her knife, causing Samuel Windsprite to draw his pistol. Callie, who has just arrived on the scene, spots the man aiming his weapon at Emily and corks him on the head with a half-empty wine bottle, knocking him down. Deciding that discretion is the better part of valour, the player characters leave the violence-filled tavern, throwing its proprietor, Marshal Dacewind, several handfuls of Helios.
Once outside the Good Spirits, the player characters tidy themselves up, make sure they've not suffered any wounds (Rich Sequoia has taken a small knife wound to the left arm, but it's not all that bothersome), and ask Callie what she's doing there. She tells them that they're all wanted back aboard the Bountiful, and this cheers them up as they've been itching to get off the Skyloft for a while now.
Once the player characters return to the Bountiful, they are met by The Axe, and learn that the Captain wants to see them before they leave the mooring at Sanctum. Getting cleaned up properly, the characters arrive at the Captain's quarters, where she's been awaiting them impatiently. "Red" Angela Stormfist is sitting with a dark-haired, bearded man with blue eyes. She introduces them to Avaram Brightstar, one of the newest members of the crew and the new ship's trader. Avaram's got a lead on a trade deal that she considers a good risk at this point and time, what with all the new crew fill-ins and the recently finished repairs to the Bountiful. She tells the characters that they'll be accompanying Avarum on the first trade job, once they reach their destination - the Shadowvale Skyloft!
This session of the Abney Park's Airship Pirates RPG was the first the players had played in a couple of years, and with new player Mark's inexperience with the game system, I decided to take it easy on the players and their characters to start with in this session. The players told me they were grateful for this, as it took them a bit of time to get the hang of things again once play started, though Mark was able to get into the game quite nicely. All the players felt that the game mechanics are really nice and simple, just a matter of getting back into the game system feel and style, but that they enjoyed this new foray into the game.
The game session gave the players a chance to re-find their characters' personalities, and also a chance to integrate and involve Mark's character into the business at hand. A couple of plot hooks and a few other things have been laid down, and they're all curious about the new crewmates that will come into play. They also liked the time gap between this and the previous game session, to explain various player characters not be present any longer. So I'm actually glad they enjoyed the game session. I'm looking forward to next week's game. :)
