Cyndra Jesspian (Kathy Bauer) - Former macrocorp house-servant
Edricka Hatchett (Angela Marsh) - Stringer
Marcus Hangworth (David Matchuk) - Lostfinder
Genny (Ellie Bauer) - Street Urchin
Adrian Thornbrooke (Mark Williams) - Driver
Burn 3rd, 997
As Cyndra Jesspian and Genny (Underhill) head back for the Green Foxhound, the latter asks the former what that was all about. Cyndra tells her that she spent enough time around macrocorporate types and their machinations to recognise a poison (even if she doesn't know what it was) when she sees one. Genny is horrified at this, and the two talk about what a macrocorp would want and why they'd kill an RBlade like "Gadget" Hawkins. Cyndra suggests that it might be about gadgets, as Hawkins was obviously some type of technical sort. Genny says he was very good with mechanical and electrical repairs. That gives Cyndra an idea, and they head somewhere else instead of the Green Foxhound.
At the Dead Scurt, Edricka Hatchett is annoyed at the prolonged absence of Marcus Hangworth, but there's nothing she can do about it. After having a sub-standard meal at the Scurt, during which she curses Hammy Franks about the quality of the food, Edricka decides to seek out more news that might be worthy for the paper. The stringer decides first to go back to Jonas Thappert's flat, and see what she might have missed there. When she arrives at the flat, she finds there are several Provosts present, led by DI Malic Pessrin. She is questioned by the Provosts, but having nothing to contribute to their investigations, is told that the Thappert flat is quarantined until further notice. A disappointed Edricka heads back the way she came.
Marcus Hangworth and Adrian Thornbrooke are approached by the two thugs, both jakes, who threaten them. Adrian tells the two that they don't want any trouble, but when one of them insults him, Adrian's temper gets the better of him, and he lays into the two of them using his handy wrench as a weapon. Marcus hangs back, and knocks down one of them when he is able to get the drop on him. The two of them check themselves out for injuries and dust themselves off, and then head for the doorway of Rogerson's Inquiries.
Hailing one of the boatmen on the Green Canal, Cyndra and Genny ferry over to Mire End, where Cyndra says they can find someone who might be able to answer a couple of questions. At a dilapidated building near the edge of Redberry Park, the two find the man Cyndra is looking for - Jered Crane, a former associate of her employer, Hansom Montoya. Crane is suspicious of her when she first greets him, but soon welcomes her and Genny to his abode. The place reeks of chemical smells, and there's a foulness, a smell of decay that permeates all. Crane listens to Cyndra's story of what she saw when they got to the body of "Gadget" Hawkins, and he tells her that it was most likely a poison called Lady's Eye, used by assassins of several of the macrocorps. Notably Arclight. This causes Cyndra to be very worried, though she's not sure why the macrocorp would want to kill the insignificant gadgie (Genny bristles when Cyndra calls Hawkins "insignificant"). She says this needs thinking about, and they'll require some help. A trip to the Dead Scurt might well be in order. The two head back to the docks, and a return to Folly Hills.
As Edricka heads back to the Dead Scurt, she is aware that she's being followed, her two pursuers not making any bones about their following her. Tiring of the game, and thinking she may find out what's going on, she lies in wait for the two of them, and then confronts them. The two present themselves as Sendro and Hallis, a pair of "for hires" who have been pursuing her on behalf of their client. They refuse to tell her who they're working for, but state that their employer wants to make sure they're not aware of her purposes. Edricka attempts to learn more about "her" from them, but to no avail. "Don't follow after us, Miss, or you'll be sorry," states Sendro as the pair start to move off. Naturally, Edricka starts to shadow them as the two move off.
Entering Rogerson's Inquiries, Marcus and Adrian are greeted by Wilbarth Rogerson, who tells Adrian that he's a purveyor of various types of information. Marcus and Rogerson renew their friendship, and the lostfinder explains why he's come to Fogwarren. Marcus describes the piece of metal resembling a silver corkscrew, with the winged animal figure with an infinity symbol in it. Rogerson says that he doesn't know what the symbol is or recognise it, but that he has various sources and can learn what he can about it. He names a price that the lostfinder considers fair, and Rogerson says he will have the information in a couple of days; he'll send word to them when he has more. The two exit the shoppe, and start to make their way back to the docks, and Max Barnes's water taxi through the fog-shrouded streets. The sound of a chain slapping against a dogskin clad leg alerts them to the fact that they might be in trouble...
As mentioned earlier, Friday night's session of the a|state RPG campaign went pretty well, with the player characters making some head way in their investigations of various incidents, but the answers received leading to more and more questions. The players told me that they're having a good time with the adventure, and Mark was particularly looking forward to doing some more "bone crushing damage", though he said that even he has come to appreciate the lethality of the a|state combat mechanics.
Overall, a pretty good game session. I'm looking forward to continuing on with the game next week. Weather willing, of course.
