Peter Granger (SteveR) - Artist (Painter)
Aislinn Drohan (Tammy) - Auction House Providencer
Brian Hartigan (GM/NPC) - Courier Deliveryman
March 13th, 2014 (Thursday)
The player characters and Hailey Clands arrive at the Lynch home, and make their way out to the rear of the house. Aislinn Drohan and Hailey locate the spot where Becky Lynch was killed (made evident by the police tape in the area). There are no signs of police officers and the like, so the group proceeds through the line to check out the scene of the crime. While there's no physical evidence that they can see, Aislinn and Brian Hartigan see that there's a large, blood-soaked area where Becky Lynch was killed, indicating the body had not been moved. Peter Granger looks around at the trees, and sees scuff marks in one of the nearest trees. He is almost frightened by the sight of two large eyes in a nearby tree, and breathes a sigh of relief as it is merely an owl.
While Aislinn looks around the nearby trees, Hailey checks out the nearby forest, and spots claw indentations in the forest floor. Brian and Peter head off with Hailey, leaving Aislinn on her own. It is Brian who spots what appear to be a pile of bones. The two are able to tell that some of the bones are definitely human, although Peter isn't certain. Aislinn calls out for the characters, and she is rventually reunited with the others. Hailey tells the others that the claw prints seem to be leading towards the footbridge that is used by several joggers and Park personnel to cross the Madawaska. The others realise this is how the Bogeys crossed the river into the Whitney area without being spotted.
After a somewhat hair-raising crossing of the river below them, the player characters continue to follow the trail on the Algonquin Park side, but Hailey says that the trails cuts away from the path into the forest. After some discussion, where they talk about whether to continue on, the player characters and Hailey proceed, as Brian points out they have to find the lair of the creatures.
Continuing to follow Hailey, Peter smells something charnel, and proceeding cautiously forward, finds a pile of leftover, soiled and torn clothes. Before the characters can do anything else, they come under attack as the creatures heave a log [actually a very heavy, somewhat large branch] at Brian, who manages to evade it. Hailey and the player characters move around the belongings, but Peter spots something else on the trail. Telling the others to wait there, he goes and checks it out - it appears to be brain and spinal fluid in a sticky trail along the ground. [SteveR flips a Token Dark to gain +10 to the T# and avoid gaining more Trauma.] He tells the rest of the characters what he found, and leads them around it.
Hailey continues tracking the Bogeys' trail, but she is led astray [through the use of an Evil Way Discipline]. As the player characters continue to move along, Aislinn spots that they are being followed by the Bogeys. However, she decides to make a Sense the Unknown roll, and discovers there is no Unknown presence in the area! When she comments on this Brian orders the others to stop.
Just before the characters do so, the confused Hailey falls down a pit trap [and takes a Minor Injury for -10 STA]. When Hailey screams, Peter dashes forward and he too falls into the pit (but fortunately doesn't land on Hailey) [and takes a Minor Injury for -10 STA]. Aislinn and Brian search for the two of them, eventually finding them through Peter's shouting for help. Brian shines his flashlight down the pit, and along with his own flashlight (Hailey having lost hers when she fell), Peter can tell it's identical to the pit that Aislinn fell into the day before. Peter checks on Hailey, and sees she's disoriented and confused, and also has a leg injury. Aislinn checks around the area, shining her flashlight, and sees two Bogeys seemingly flitting in and hiding behind the trees. Brian wants to anchor the length of rope he brought with him. Aislinn sees a shadow above her; she sees another of the creatures flitting through the trees. Aislinn ties the rope to one of the trees, and Brian is able to bring Hailey out after Peter ties her to the rope. (She's still dazed and confused, and now has a twisted knee.) Aislinn does another Sense the Unknown check, and determines that Hailey has been influenced by the Bogeys. Eventually, Brian and Aislinn get Peter out of the pit as well.
The player characters realise Hailey hasn't been leading them after the Bogeys' trail, and Aislinn tells Brian that she's been under the influence of an Evil Way Discipline of the creatures. While the player characters debate what to do and how to transport Hailey out of the woods, Aislinn uses her spare nylon jacket and some sticks to bind up Hailey's knee. The young guide finally recovers her senses, and learns from the player characters what has happened. With her sense of direction restored, Hailey is able to lead the characters back to where the footbridge trail is, and then over to the Mad Musher, as they've decided it's better for her to go back there with them. With both Peter and Hailey injured, it's a long walk back.
The next morning, the 14th of March (Friday), Hailey is recovering in her room at the Mad Musher after Dr. Pondpoole checked her out and treated her on their return the night before. Brian talks with her on the way down to breakfast about matters, and she is intent to go with them out into the Park forest once more. Over breakfast, the characters learn from Sheriff Griggs that another body has been found - a recreational hiker named Richard Fitzpatrick of Fall Creek Terrace - whose limbs are missing. The characters once more talk about what to do with the Sheriff's input, and he tells them they'll need an experienced guide; that means it comes down to Hailey or the former SAVE envoy, Brian Marshall (aka Stig Larsson). Aislinn says that they promised Stig that they wouldn't involve him, and Brian points out that Hailey will likely not stay sidelined, regardless, and that she's their best bet. They just have to look after her a bit better out in the wilderness. Hailey arrives in the dining room of the Mad Musher, and joins them for breakfast.
Sunday afternoon's game session of the Chill 3rd Edition RPG campaign was an enjoyable one for the most part, but somewhat frustrating for me as the players and their characters made very little headway in the investigation and finally tracking down the creature(s). There was some decent roleplaying in this game session, but overall it was a bit less than satisfying as the plot went. Despite the fact that I've gone over the game mechanics and the use of the Light/Dark Tokens several times, the players aren't really making use of them to any great extent, and this may have something to do with the seeming lack of progress in the storyline.
Overall, I can't say this session of the game was a great one, but I'm enjoying running the Chill 3rd Edition RPG system, and am looking forward to hopefully wrapping up the case next week.
