Wednesday Night Game Report - DragonQuest Session 1

Wednesday night, the Wednesday night players started play in their DragonQuest RPG campaign. Here are the game session notes. You can read about the characters the players created in this journal entry. This blog entry is only somewhat long, but I've put it behind a cut so that folks who don't want to read any detailed rpg posts don't have to.

CHARACTERS:

Renna Tilawan (Donna) - Gontish Sailor
Savar Breikal (DavidW) - Man-at-Arms
Kavra Devaris (Kendall) - Adventurous Cartographer
Arabela of Semulia (Crystal) - Travelling Adept

Japrian 28th, 2556 GA (Galenian Age)

[The players begin with an introduction to the world of the DragonQuest Roleplaying Game. The players learn some of the basic mechanics of the game, get a bit of a lesson on the DragonQuest Glossary and some terms used in the game, and partake in several samples of combat using the Tactical Display that teaches them the basic (combat) mechanics of the traditional, old school fantasy roleplaying game. And how deadly the combat system is.]

The scenario opens in the early spring of 2556 GA (Galenian Age) as the player characters accompany a caravan through the Sweet Riding, having made the trip from Tobintown in the Brastor Holding towards Slippery Rock in the Barony of Carzala, with a final destination of the city of Seagate. Each of the player characters has made the trip from Brastor Holding to Carzala for their own reasons. Renna Tilawan, a Gontish sailor, has decided that it's time to return to a life at sea, as the landlubber's life is not for her, though she's learned a lot. She's made a friend in Kavara Devaris, a travelling cartographer, and the two have considered seeing if they can find a ship that will take them on the treacherous sea voyage to the Archipelago. Savar Breikal, a former man-at-arms native to the Stonesboro area of Carzala who served the Carzalan military, has found a new home working with caravans and other travellers between the Barony and the Brastor Holding, but longs for a bit more "adventure". Arabela of Semulia, an Enchantress who's also pretty quick with a quarterstaff, has found her way into the area through luck, but has been somewhat withdrawn from the rest of the caravan personnel, though her magics have been useful over the last few days. The person she's had the most contact with has been Renna Tilawan, the sailor and the mage having knowledge of and a fondness for the Archipelago in common.

The caravan has arrived near the edge of the Artusian Hills, several days yet from Slippery Rock. Searching for a good area to camp, the caravan Master, Sheritak Colman, tells the player characters to proceed ahead cautiously, and find them a spot they can make camp at for the night. Leaving most of their gear with the caravan, Savar leads the player characters off to the northwest, in search of a good place to camp. The characters talk about what sort of shelter they're looking for, and Renna asks Savar (since he knows the area), what the dangers are here. He tells her and the others that the Artusian Hills are known for outlaws and brigands, who attack caravans, though there are other creatures associated with mountainous/hilly terrain that make their home there as well. Arabela sarcastically remarks that he means they need to keep their eyes out for *anything*, but Savar lets the comment pass.

The characters come upon a scrub-filled area with a couple of copses of woods dotted with several large rocks and boulders that Renna thinks would make for a good camp area. Savar has his suspicions, and cries out a warning just before three bandits, wearing light leather armour and brandishing spears and short swords, attack the party from ambush. The fight between the player characters and the bandits is brutal, with Savar leading the way into the fray. His broadsword wreaks havoc on his first opponent, taking down the bandit with ease, though he suffers a minor wound [4 Damage Points) in the process. Kavra and Arabela take on another opponent between them, the enchantress not having time to prepare, let alone cast, a spell, but her quarterstaff and Kavra's short sword are enough to turn the tide. They are hard pressed to kill the bandit, but the arrival of Savar allows them to kill the bandit together. Meanwhile, Renna takes on the final bandit, her skill with the cutlass and her speed allowing her to deal him several serious wounds. She takes a pair of minor injuries herself [a total of 5 Damage Points] before she loses her temper, and makes the killing blow.

With the bandits dead, the player characters take stock of their injuries, but realise they are not wounded too badly (though Renna is concerned her wounds may be infected). The player characters debate what they should do next, but Kavra takes the matter out of the others' hands by saying they should check the bodies, and see if they've got anything that might be interesting on them...

Wednesday night's game session of the DragonQuest game was a good session, and a good start to the campaign. I spent about 40 minutes with the players doing samples of combat, since the graphic nature of combat in the game on the Tactical Display takes a bit of time getting used to. The players were somewhat surprised by this old school fantasy roleplaying game. In the sample combats, nothing quite like the party facing a pair of orcs, and realising they have the same number of hit points (well, the game uses Fatigue and Endurance) the player characters do. They used some interesting tactics to fight the orcs, especially when the Enchanter's sleep spell backfired! Once I started the actual scenario, with the characters travelling in the caravan towards the Barony of Carzala, some of the player characters' personalities started to emerge, much to the startlement of several of the players! The fight with the bandits was highly enjoyable on the part of the players, and they handled themselves well.

Overall, a pretty satisfying opening game session of the DragonQuest game campaign for the Wednesday night, and I'm looking forward to continuing this opening scenario. Can't wait for the next session! :)
