Wednesday Night Game Report - Primeval RPG Session 9

Last night, the Wednesday night players continued their campaign of the Primeval RPG. Here are the game session notes for Wednesday night. You can read about the previous session of the game in this journal entry. This post is somewhat long, and I’ve put it behind a cut so that folks who don’t want to read any detailed rpg posts don’t have to.

Dr. Paula Richardson (Donna) – Palaeontologist
Sgt. Charles Kinson (DavidW) – Former Soldier
Joanne (“Jonie”) Williams (Kendall) – Reporter
Helena Robertson (Crystal) – Computer Geek

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

In a clearing in the woodland area, Helena Robertson wildly fends off the attacking creatures, as she clings desperately to a tree’s limbs. The creatures continue to spring into the air trying to get at her, but she continues to use the branch that she grabbed up to defend herself, though she’s taken several slashes on her arms [for a total of 3 damage points]. Cocking their heads as one, the creatures utter some chirp-like barks, and then start to race into the woods.

As Sgt. Charles Kinson and his Project Tempus men, Joanne Williams, and Dr. Paula Richardson burst into a clearing, they see what appear to be several human-sized bipedal creatures dash off into the wild, leaving a stunned, somewhat wild-eyed black-haired woman clutching a branch that she is waving frenziedly around her from her perch in a tree. There are several cuts and lacerations on her arms. While Charles has his men fan out, but not take on the creatures directly, Paula and Joanne make their way cautiously towards the woman.

Joanne cautiously climbs up onto one of the lower branches to talk to the woman, making no aggressive moves, while Paula waits below. Joanne manages to calm the woman down, and learns her name is Helena Robertson. She learns from Helena what happened to her, and how she ended up in the woods being menaced by the “lizards”. She convinces Helena to descend from the tree, which she does somewhat shakily, and introductions are made all around (minus Sgt. Kinson who’s occupied with his men). Helena reacts kindly to Paula as the latter ministers to her cuts and wounds, and expresses an interest after Helena tells her about the “lizards”.

Charles returns to where the women are with one of his men, the other left to patrol and keep an eye on the situation. After he’s introduced to Helena, he tells Paula and Joanne that he lost the creatures in the woodland, and demands to know from Helena what she’s doing there. Joanne chastises him, telling him she’s had a rough bit, and the three women lead the way back towards the SUVs and Helena’s red vehicle. Helena demands to know what’s going on, but Charles tells her nothing, saying that it’s not her business. Helena challenges this angrily, but Paula tells her to calm down and they’ll tell her some of what they know.

Paula tells Charles that she’s going back to the clearing for a bit, after she grabs a large pack out of the SUV. He insists on sending his man back with her, to which she agrees, and head out to the clearing. At the clearing, she finds the other Tempus man there, and asks the two of them if they actually saw the creatures. Edwards tells her that he did; it was about 2-1/2 metres long, a meter high, had large eyes, four digits, a long neck and elongated head, and a rigid tail. He thinks
the teeth were recurved, and that it had short claws. Paula finds several impressions [she spends 2 Story Points], and starts to take a quick cast of it after photographing it with her mobile phone. The two men keep watch.

Back at the SUVs and the Honda Civic, Joanne explains to Helena a little bit of what they do, but Charles berates her for it, saying that they don’t know this woman yet. “Maybe not,” says Joanne, “but she had the spunk to stand up to a small pack of the creatures.” He agrees, and tells Helena a bit more about their presence there. Joanne tells him that whatever they do, they need to find the creatures soonest, and the Shard as well. Helena asks her what a “shard” is, and Joanne tries to explain it to her.

In the clearing, Edwards informs Paula that he’s found what appear to be some human tracks heading into the woods, probably along one of the overgrown walking trails that hasn’t been cleared at this time of year. The other Tempus man, Hawkins, calls in to Sgt. Kinson, and tells them what they’ve found. Charles informs him that they’ll be joining them as soon as possible. Paula asks Edwards about the age of the prints, but he says that while he can’t date them properly, they’re pretty recent. And that they’re likely male. Paula says that they can’t wait, and grabbing up the casting she’s made, tells Edwards to lead on and find that man.

At the SUVs, Charles tells Joane what Hawkins told him, and they decide to quickly head after the others. Helena says that they can’t just leave her there, and Joanne asks if she wants to get involved in this. “Hell, yeah!” says Helena, “most... scary fun I’ve had in a while.” [She forfeits a Story Point for going against her nature.] The group heads back to the clearing to find Paula and the others have disappeared. Charles quickly spots the human prints that Hawkins mentioned, and finds several fresh sets heading in the same direction. Cursing under his breath, Charles leads the group in that direction, at a more than sedate pace.

Paula, Edwards, and Hawkins follow the trail left by the person, Paula becoming concerned as even she can see that the human’s prints are on the same path as that of the creatures. Edwards and Hawkins draw their weapons as they come upon a scene of carnage: what appear to be the corpses of several animals, possibly the remains of cows, savaged and torn apart. Unable to restrain herself, Paula throws up nearby. Overcoming her revulsion [by spending a Story Point], Paula goes over and examines the remains. She can’t be sure, but there appear to be claw marks in the savaged animal flesh. The group are alerted as Charles and the others join them.

Charles berates Edwards and Hawkins for putting the palaeontologist in danger, as Joanne and Helena both lose their lunch at the sight before them. Paula goes up to the two women, and talks to them about what’s going on here. She says she thinks they’re dealing with something from the late Triassic or early Jurassic, maybe Coelophysis, but she’s not sure yet. Even as the group talks, while the Project Tempus team takes an observation role, a figure staggers out of the forest, blooding pouring from multiple injuries on his body, and he is closely being followed by a large group of the prehistoric creatures!

Wednesday night’s game session of the Primeval RPG was one that I really enjoyed, and did a good job of distracting me from the various problems that I’m dealing with at the moment. The players had a good time, and did a bit of everything in this session. Donna, DavidW, and Kendall’s characters got to meet Crystal’s character for the first time, and I was looking forward to that meeting; it did not disappoint.:) The players had a good deal of fun roleplaying, both with the NPCs and with each other, and found the session intriguing.

Overall, a highly enjoyable game session of Primeval RPG, and the players quite enjoyed themselves. I did, too, and am looking forward to the next session.
