First Triad, Dancer Segment, Day 6, CC 58
It has been five days since the player characters left Alhabra IV (Schadi), and now they wait at the portal station for a bulk hauler to proceed to the portal for the purposes of jumping. The players are resting in their quarters onboard the Ruby Flower, somewhat bored. On the bridge, Naima Saab, working the sensors, pipes a message through the ship that there's action near the portal. A courier ship has come through the portal, and is heading straight for the Alhabra portal station. The others give a mocking cheer, and Naima says there's nothing else going on. Perhaps they should just dock at the portal station, and see what's going on? The others veto this, on the grounds that they can ill afford the docking fees at the moment. The monotony that has plagued the ship for the last several days continues.
Several hours later, with Hafisa darRouash on bridge duty, a message comes in to the ship from Alhabra portal station. Hafisa acknowledges receipt of the message, and then calls the crew together in the communal lounge. As Naima, Zouma Abid-Arif, Moustafa Harouz and Tafik Sharoun come in and make themselves comfortable, Hafisa tells them they have an interesting choice ahead of them. Moustafa demands to know what's going on, and Hafisa defers to him (reluctantly), and passes the message over to him. He regards it, and then his eyes go wide. Moustafa asks Tafik if he knows a Professor Darfal ibn Salumar. Tafik has to think about it a bit, but then acknowledges that he does; they were students together at the Dabaran Institute, and both went on to archaeological studies. They've kept in touch over the years, but that hasn't been easy. Moustafa asks him if he wants to renew their acquaintance. The courier message is from Professor ibn Salumar, routed through the Colonial Agency. He's asking for Tafik's help with something on one of Mira's southern continents, and asks for him to meet him as soon as possible on Mira station. Since Alhabra is only two portal jumps from Mira, the group considers their options, and debates the situation. After some ten minutes of debate, the characters decide that going to Mira is as good as any a destination, and perhaps they'll find something of interest there. Hafisa points out that they'll have to incur the portal jump costs for the trip to Mira, and that's going to run some serious birr. Tafik attempts to console her with the fact that they might be able to get reimbursement on the fees from either the Colonial Agency or whoever Professor ibn Salumar is working for. Moustafa heads to the bridge, and contacts Alhabra portal station. He asks them to plot the course through the portal for them to Zib, and then tells the rest of the crew to "set to it".
Three days later, the Ruby Flower portal jumps into the Mira system, to find the system in somewhat of an uproar. The Foundation has dispatched a research vessel, accompanied by a Legion ship with a complete detachment of Legionnaires on board, which arrived three days ago. As the Ruby Flower moves in towards the portal station, Naima tells Hafisa and Moustafa that there's an incoming message from the station. She takes down the message, and hands it across to Moustafa. He reads it, and his face goes white. He calls Tafik on the ship's comm and tells him to get to the bridge, quickly. When Tafik arrives, Moustafa tells him they have a problem: they are ordered to report to Governor Demorna din Soubar on Mira station as soon as possible. Moustafa remembers [using his Culture skill] that Mira is Firstcome-controlled, but isn't sure what's going on. Tafik says that it's got to have something to do with Darfal and his work. The characters look at each other, and have an uneasy feeling about things.
Two days later, the Ruby Flower approaches Mira station on a docking vector, and Hafisa is able to bring the ship into the docks without problem. As the characters make plans for what they need to do on station while they're present, Zouma informs the captain and Hafisa that they need to get the engines recalibrated. That's a process that could take a full week, but it's necessary. Moustafa checks the crew's available funds, and says that they can afford it...just. The characters debark the station to find that the customs officers are waving them through the crowds quickly, as one of them, Elfam, says that Governor Demorna din Soubar is waiting for them. With an escort of guards, "for your protection", the characters are taken to the governor's office on one of the upper levels of Mira station. The trip to the upper echelons of the station is quick, and painless.
One of the station security personnel hands the characters off to Darisa [Marakis], the personal secretary to Governor din Soubar. Darisa tells the player characters that a situation has come up that she believes they have knowledge of. Moustafa asks what situation she's referring to, but Darisa says that's for the governor to say, but that they should exercise discretion in their dealings with her. Darisa listens for a moment on her head comm, and then says it's time. She ushers the characters into the Governor's office.
The Governor's opulent office is contrasted with the simple clothing that Demorna din Soubar is wearing. After introductions are made and pleasantries are exchanged, Governor din Soubar gets right to the point. She says that Professor Darfal ibn Salumar has gone missing on Mira's southernmost continent, and that his representative, Sumala, has been severely injured during a shootout in the station's slums. To Tafik's questions about what happened, Governor din Soubar says that details on what happened on Mira are sketchy at this point, but they are awaiting more information. As for the attack on Sumala Fadros, it appears to have been nothing more than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Moustafa wonders what ibn Salumar's representative was doing in the slums of the station, but Governor din Soubar says that they can try to talk to her. She makes a call on her station link, and soon a man wearing light body armour and several facial scars on his otherwise handsome face enters the office. The Governor introduces him as Blake Harold, the Chief of Security on Mira station. She says that he can take them to see Sumala. Before they can say anything else, Harold says, "Well, it's a pleasure seeing you again, Naima."
Friday night's game session of the Coriolis - The Third Horizon RPG campaign went quite well, and was enjoyable for all concerned. The players were intrigued by what's going on, and there was a good deal of player character interaction during which the players got a better feel for their characters and each others' characters. In addition, they each got a better look at the game mechanics in action, and got to figure out a few more aspects of their personalities, while also interacting with some interesting NPCs.
Overall, I'm looking forward to the next Friday night game session of the Coriolis - The Third Horizon RPG, and the players are, too.
