Saturday, and Plans

I woke up this morning somewhat late, after having a good albeit tiring game session last night with the Friday gaming group. (More on that later this morning in a separate blog entry.)

The weather outside is somewhat cold, the wind chill factor being the more dominant element, and my bones are just aching in several places. Ah, the signs of getting old... That's not going to stop me today, as I've got a friend coming over to give me a lift to buy some veggies and stuff that I've run out of. (There's something else I need to buy as well, but I can't remember what it is.)

I've got a few other things that I want to do today. Need to do some work on the Atomic Highway game that I'm running on both the Friday and Sunday groups. And I want to continue reading the draft of River of Heaven as well. I want to do some general reading, as I'm rather enjoying my current book read. And then there's a bit of NHL hockey, Olympic events, and curling to watch. If my head is up to it.

In the meantime, time for some breakfast, and then a shower. After that, the grocery shopping.

Friday's Night's Atomic Highway Game Session

As mentioned in the previous journal entry, I managed to game with the Friday night gaming group last night.

The players were pretty eager to game last night, as I was starting a one- or three-shot of the Atomic Highway post-apocalyptic roleplaying game. Everyone showed up a bit early, around 6:45 pm - 7:00 pm, and we got the gaming underway a bit earlier.

I started the players off with going over the basic rules, a bit about the game world, and then got into some sample combats. Once everyone had the hang of that (with some merry bashing of each other and some beasties being enjoyed immensely!), I got down to the adventure. Suffice it to say I'll be posting up a separate blog entry with the game session notes when I have a chance to transcribe them, but I will say the group had a pleasant night of it.

I decided that rather than start the characters all together, the player characters would be somewhat known to each other, but not necessarily friendly. (That would be up to the players.) And that they would encounter each other in smaller groups, each dealing with some events going on. I also knew that I wanted to do a bit of in media res as well, and I managed to pull that off remarkably well.

The players told me that they had a blast (so to speak) in the session, and found that I tailored things to their characters as best I could, within reason. Kathy said that she loved the in media res manner that I started the game with, and that it got the blood flowing. David didn't like the-- well, you'll just have to wait and see what that was all about when I blog up the game session. Think of this as whetting your appetite! :) Even Ellie got into the act a little bit, but all the players got to test out various mechanics once I started the game session.

In any event, I had a ball with this session of Atomic Highway, and am looking forward to next Friday night's game session. :)

A Busy Saturday

*Whew!* I am exhausted. Feels like a very long day.

To start with, Nick was in the east end of Ottawa, since he wanted to check out the Farm Boy stores out here, so he came over relatively early this morning and then we went over to the two Farm Boys and took care of some basic shopping and the like. I managed to pick up all the veggies that I needed to restock and make some Chinese stir fry for supper, but forgot to buy the spinach for omelets (naturally!). I got back to the house, and took a second shower, just to warm up somewhat (as I found it bitterly cold out).

Then I got in touch with spross, who was already in Ottawa, and we arranged to go for lunch at Tim Horton's before heading out for some grocery shopping browsing. At Tim's, we had a delicious chili with a whole wheat bun; I slopped some of the chili on myself, silly me. Good food, and quite warming to the soul. From there, we went over to the Independent Grocer, as he needed to pick up a prescription and I wanted to talk to the pharmacist about some aspects of insulin. I also picked up some Pizza Pockets (as they were on special). Then we went to South Keys. Over to Bulk Barn, where I picked up some cinnamon, made some inquiries about a couple of other substances, and had spross help me avoid the temptation of some of the sweets and junk stuff there. :) After that, a final stop at Chapters, and looked at various books and the like. I picked up a new post-apocalypse anthology of stories and a copy of Alastair Reynold's Revelation Space (in anticipation of running River of Heaven.

Once spross dropped me off back at the house, after going over his Atomic Highway character's background with me before tomorrow over a cup of tea and some biscuits, I settled in and watched the rest of the Ottawa Senators-Boston Bruins hockey game (they hammered Ottawa 7-2). By the time I got home, my left ankle was just throbbing and hurting like mad, and I needed to rest for a bit.

We'll see what the evening has in store.

A Quiet Saturday Night

Supper is done.

A good stir fry, if I say so myself. I made it simply this time - green and red peppers, mushrooms, onions, bok choy, water chestnuts, and a couple of things I can't remember at the moment - and used chicken that I tried to cut into thin strips. Very nice and quite tasty after adding spices and the like. Served on a small bed of basmati rice. Yummy.

After cleaning up the dishes from supper and all, I wanted to do some work on gaming things or maybe read, but that didn't work out too well. I experienced a bit more blurriness in the left eye, and so sat down for a while on a good chair and just relaxed. No tv, no reading, no computer. Feeling somewhat better now, so I'm typing this up before I get ready for bed and an early evening. Might even read a bit.
