Start of November

It is a new month. November.

Or Movember, as it's also known, since a lot of men grow moustaches for the math as a means of supporting Prostate Cancer research and the like. (Since I have a moustache already, I guess I can just let it grow a bit longer, right? :) )

On a more serious note, for me, November this year represents a medical month. I've got a lot of doctor's appointments this month, starting on Tuesday with a hearing test, and it's likely that I'll be starting insulin this month as well.

Hopefully, Old Man Winter decides to hold off somewhat in regards to the white stuff. I'd really appreciate that.

10 Tropes Involving Fantasy Weapons That Should Die In A Fire

Over on io9, Katharine Trendacosta posted this up.

10 Tropes Involving Fantasy Weapons That Should Die In A Fire

While I agree with her in a lot of ways, the stuff she's describing here really isn't about Sword & Sorcery so much, as about general fantasy. Most of the tropes listed here outright contradict the genre. Conan doesn't use special weapons, he uses anything that comes to hand, including the bone he's been eating. Vin Diesel's Riddick is a S&S character compared to someone who waxes lyrical about the rare blade. Elric was written to turn S&S tropes on their heads, not as an example of them.

Thoughts, comments, observations? :)

Running Some CHILL Tonight

I'm rather looking forward to this evening.

I thought I wasn't going to get a chance to game this weekend, between family and Halloween circumstances, but the Friday night group agreed yesterday that they wanted to play a Halloween-themed game. As a result, I'll be running a game for the group tonight, and am looking forward to it.

Rather than running a Halloween-themed game, I figure I'll run something horror and spooky in celebration of Halloween. So... There's a new edition of CHILL, the classic horror game from Pacesetter and then 2nd Edition from Mayfair Games, CHILL 3rd Edition, coming out next year from the folks at Growling Door Games (you can see the just wrapped up CHILL 3rd Edition Kickstarter for a lot more about the game currently), and there's a Quick-Start set of rules and a sample adventure for the game with some pre-gen player characters for the game out. So that's what I'm going to run tonight.

I can't wait! :)
