Day 23 - Edge
Good prompt word for the day. Lots of potential.
When I think of the prompt word, it brings to mind where the best places to have adventures are in a game world or universe. Most folks will say that urban environments lend themselves well to having adventures because of the sheer variety of people one can meet. For me, the best place for adventures is the Edge. This could mean the edge of the known world, the edge of civilization (aka the frontier) or even the edge of the town where the veneer of civilization starts to slip and where the folklore and myths and rural stories come to the fore.
There are a lot of reasons that adventures on the edge of something work best. The best one, in my opinion, is that the player characters are out there on their own potentially, having to rely on the weapons and gear they have at hand, but most of all on their wits. There's no cavalry coming to the rescue. Sure, there may be some NPCs to help them out through information or abilities or skills that they might need to access out in the frontier/wilderness, but by and large the player characters are the stars of adventures, and in this case, they tend to really have to shine brightly.
And there you have this twenty-third post for this #RPGaDay for August, 2020. Comments, thoughts, questions, etc. are all welcome, of course. :)
