A Roleplaying Game (Fading Suns) Surprise

One of the science fiction, well, science fantasy, roleplaying games that I've always adored was the old Fading Suns RPG, originally published by Holistic Designs in 1996, with a second edition in 1999, and than RedBrick published a third edition in 2013. The Fading Suns RPG uses the Victory Point System, a rather neat and simple set of game mechanics that works quite well for the science fantasy rpg, and would be a good system to use for other science fiction rpgs.

Last year (2020), Ulisses Spiele announced that they had got the rights to the game, and were going to be publishing a 4th Edition of the Fading Suns RPG. They launched a Kickstarter for the new version of the game, called Fading Suns: Pax Alexius, which was primarily handled on GameOnTabletop, but I missed out on that crowdfunding for the game due to serious health issues, that ran from March through April of 2020. As can be seen from the Kickstarter page, there was a whole bunch of materials that were crowdfunded for the game, including three main books - the Character Book, the Universe Book, and the Gamemaster book.

Anyway, suffice it to say that when Ulisses Spiele launched their U.S. version of their F-Shop (the place to buy all Spiele stuff) earlier this year, I went there and was thrilled to see that the Fading Suns RPG, 4th Edition game materials for the most part were going to be available there. However, to my shock and dismay, the print materials would only be available to the U.S. and Europe for purchase, with only PDFs available in Canada and elsewhere. So, what did I do? I made arrangements with a friend in the U.S. to take delivery of the merchandise for me (14 different items ordered!) and then ship it to me. But in the meantime, I got in touch with the folks at Ulisses Spiele and tried to arrange getting them directly, since I was ordering soooo many books and such a high cost for the products. However, I was told that the game materials could not be shipped directly to Canada due to the way the U.S. F-Shop was set up, but that arrangements were being worked on for a Canadian processing for some later either this year or into the new year. I saw that the order was being processed on the date that I ordered it, the 9th of August, and figured I wouldn't receive the product until some time in September, or perhaps October.

So imagine my shock and surprise this morning, when Canada Post arrived at my door and delivered a massive package (weighing over 20 lbs.) from the folks at Studio 2 Publishing, the U.S. distributor for Ulisses Spiele! And guess what it contained? Yep, that's right... my order from the F-Shop of the entire run of products from the first crowdfunding.

This included the three core books mentioned above (the Character Book, the Universe Book, the Gamemaster Book, a photo of which is provided), the Faction Book, the House Hawkwood Dossier book, the Urth Orthodox Dossier book, the Reeves Guild Dossier book, the Gamemaster Screen, the Play Kit, Intrigues & Escapades, the State & Perk Card Set (360 cards), the Deluxe Metal Tokens (2 sets), and the Cloth Jumpweb Map mat. Incredible!

I got in touch with the folks at Ulisses Spiele again, and my contact there told me that the folks in charge of the line talked about it, and agreed that the amount of money I'd spent justified shipping the materials directly to me - but that this wasn't going to be a regular thing, and any other orders I'd make from the F-Shop would have to go through my friend in the U.S.. Anyway, like I said... a real shock, but such a pleasant surprise.

And yes, I plan on running the Fading Suns RPG, 4th Edition in a fresh campaign some time during the new year (2022). In the meantime, I've got a lot of gaming materials to read for the game! :)
