RPGaDay2021 in August - August 30th: Mention

We continue on today with #RPGaDay2021 in August.

Day 30 - Mention.

I'd like to offer two thoughts about the prompt word for today.

First off, I'd like to mention that while this month's #RPGaDay has brought up a lot of different elements about roleplaying games, one that thing that needs stating is that without artwork, roleplaying game rulebooks and supplements would be somewhat bland and boring to look at. Roleplaying games are very visual products, their appearance catching the eye first, and the interior artwork keeping the reader hooked and interested/intrigued. While I suspect that a good number of illustrations in roleplaying games these days are computer rendered or at least done largely on computer screens, I just want to give kudos to those pencillers, inkers, and illustrators who provide roleplaying gamers with the visual look of the games that we buy and play.

My second thought: The game world that the players and Gamemasters interact in is meant to be a living, non-static thing. While the actions of the player characters do and should matter, the game world and life does go on around them. One thing I like to do, and I think that more GMs should do in their games, is to mention things that are going on in the game world around the player characters. It can be sports, music, politics, or news. The snippets of conversation that the player characters hear on the streets as they pass by or that they hear while eating their latest meal in an inn or tavern. These little things bring the game world alive, both for the players and the GM.

And there you have it, my thoughts on this thirtieth day of #RPGaDay for August, 2021.

Comments, thoughts, questions, etc. are all welcome, of course. :)
