Sunday Afternoon Game Report - Coriolis - The Third Horizon RPG, Session 0 Redux 2 or 3

Spent a relatively enjoyable game with the Sunday gaming group yesterday afternoon.

The Sunday afternoon gaming group restarted their campaign yesterday afternoon of the Coriolis - The Third Horizon RPG game. Since the players hadn't got very far with the system in their original run, they have opted to start play pretty much from scratch in terms of their game.

Once the players showed up at my place around 1:00 pm or so yesterday afternoon, we chatted for around 10 minutes or so, and caught up a bit on each other's personal lives. When enough time had passed, I told everyone that it was time, and we sat down and started in on the game. As I do with all my Session 0s (though I've lost track of the number of times the Sunday players have done the Session 0 for their game), I started off the afternoon by giving the players a very brief overview of the universe of the Third Horizon, and they were pretty much digging it once again, especially the "Arabian Nights in space" pitch (though they all know that it's not strictly about that), and Tammy requested a bit more information on exactly what that term meant and implied. We talked about the basic rules and mechanics of the game once more, and then got into some of the sub-systems that the players wanted to know about in more detail. Then we got to talking about the basics of character generation, I answered some of their questions, and then we started in on the process in earnest.

Or rather, went through the creation of their characters once more, to check that the game numbers were right. I let the player characters make any changes to the game numbers that they wanted to within what the rules allowed. Both players had vacillated between a group of Free Traders (what they had originally) and one of Explorers, but they settled on the former as neither player was comfortable exploring the unknown at this stage of playing the game. The characters work for a merchant associated with the Free League, who is a bit eccentric and also has a fondness for technologies of various types. Here are the player characters that the Sunday afternoon group created. It should also be noted that with just two players, I've also created three NPCs to help round out the crew and take care of the aspects of the character dynamics that the player characters don't cover. They're an interesting bunch, and to be honest, appear to offer a nice degree of variety and good sub-plot material.

*****
SteveR - SteveR is playing Dalal al Yousfana, a technician who originally worked in the mines on Algol, and was accused of a heinous crime that he didn't commit.

Tammy - Tammy is playing Ziva dari Boukhari, a trader from Dabaran who cannot return home until she makes right something that she lost to a would-be lover. Of course, there's more to it than that. :)

GM/NPC 1 - Ithara Kalarash is a tough, independent pilot who has gotten the opportunity to captain her own ship. She saw something out in the Dark Between the Stars that she never wishes to see again.

GM/NPC 2 - Palan Mumrabh is a former Consortium guard who fled after an incident, took on the role of a mercenary, and now tries to atone for what he did. He knows some of his former friends are after him.

GM/NPC 3 - Skot (pronounced "Skote") Habibar is an able cargo handler who fancies himself something of a technician. He's also something of a kleptomaniac, but that's another matter.

Sunday afternoon's session of character creation for the Coriolis - The Third Horizon RPG was a lot of fun, and lasted just over 4 hours. The players also went through the checking out of the trading vessel, the Ahlima's Hope, after character creation was complete, not really having to modify the ship at all so the process didn't take that long. Everyone had a lot of fun (re-)creating the characters, even Tammy, who's not a fan of going through mathematical processes, and both plaers found the character generation system painless once more.

Once that was done, I had the time to take the players and their characters through some samples of the game rules in practice, and then devoted the last 40 minutes or so to some sample combats and one quick example of spaceship combat.

The players are looking forward to getting their Coriolis - The Third Horizon campaign back under way next session, and I'm quite looking forward to this myself.
