My mother, Goddess bless her, is getting up there in years. I love her dearly, but there are times we don't get along. That's normal, I guess. We make it a nightly ritual to talk before bedtime when possible, and this is usually around 10:30 pm.
So last night, I call her place about 10:30 pm, and there's no answer. So I call her place again around 11:30 pm, and there's still no answer. Just the answering machine, on which I've left two messages. I call her place again at 12:30 am, and still no answer. Needless to say, by about a quarter to one I decide that I had better drive over to her place and check on her. Like I said, she's getting on in years.
So I get to her building, an apartment condo complex, and go inside. Go up to the floor she lives on, and rap hard on the door with the door knocker. No answer. I open the door with my key, and see the place is dark, but can hear the radio coming quite loudly from her bedroom. And the light is on in the bedroom. I shout her name, hopefully not waking her neighbours, and when that gets no reply, I bust the little chain on the chain lock1, and go in. She's lying there, in bed, reading, the radio loud as can be, and loses 5 years off her life when she realizes that I'm there...
Anyway, I thought she was dead, you know. We get the whole situation cleaned up, and had a chat about her hearing and the radio. By the time I get back to my place it's around 1:20 am, and there's no way I'm going to get to sleep very easily, given that I've still got a bit of the shakes over the whole thing. Frankly, I'm just happy that she's all right. :)
So, here I am at work, having gotten around 3 and 1/2 hours of sleep, if I'm lucky, and I've still got the Friday night game group to handle, and I'm sitting here at work having no clue what I'm doing and my co-workers all around me, busy like beavers.
Tell me again what day it is and all?
1 This just goes to show how flimsy some of these chains and chain locks on apartment/condo apartment doors tend to be, and yes, I've got to go out today and buy her a new one to install on the door. It will be a bit sturdier, trust me on this.
