I installed a large number of updates to the Linux Ubuntu machine here at home when I got back today, notably an upgrade for Firefox and a few other things, and I subconsciously must have noticed the change but didn't think anything of it.
I've now completely lost all use of sound on the laptop here at home. Totally, and completely. The volume control on the actual laptop has no effect, because it seems there are no sound software programs on the machine. The little ditty it plays when I boot the machine and it asks me to log in, the music it plays when the system goes to the Ubuntu main screen, none of it plays. No sound for anything. No CDs, no movies, no internet sites that have sound, nothing.
And I have no idea what to do about it. Oh, by the way, did I mention that I'm a computer illiterate idiot when it comes to stuff like software and hardware these days? Well, I am.
I've effectively turned my wonderful Linux Ubuntu DELL laptop into a word processor.
And now I've got to try and sleep, and hopefully wake up in five hours to get ready for work. Not bloody likely, the sleep for sure.
