Ottawa Senators' Woes

The National Hockey League schedule is approaching the relatively short Christmas break, and the Ottawa Senators will be playing their final game before Christmas in Nashville tomorrow night against the Predators.

The Ottawa Senators, to put it bluntly, are not likely to make the NHL playoffs this season unless they turn their game completely around and have the type of second-half of the season that will live in the annals of NHL history. This is a team that talks the talk, but can't seem to walk the walk, and what makes things even more annoying is that many of the Senator players that we've come to know and love are having horrible, horrible seasons. Add the Sergei Gonchar mess (the man's a minus-19 with the Sens, the team worst), and... Brian Murray's experiment with signing Alex Kovalev and Sergei Gonchar and letting Volchenkov and Sutton go has proven to be a disaster. From a porous defense to a total lack of offense, this is a Senator team that's in deep trouble.

What's the solution to this troubled team's situation? Shake it up. Ottawa's Brian Murray needs to bite the bullet and pull off a couple of deals to change the chemistry and the make-up of the team. He needs to make a trade or two that will bring in some different blood, and get rid of some of the players who just don't seem to care and make an effort these days. He needs to send a firm message to the team that more is expected of them, and he needs to do something sooner rather than later, if Ottawa were to have any chance of making the NHL playoffs this year, and even then I think it's way too late.

I now expect Ottawa Senators' fans to jump down my throat about what I've said above, but maybe other Sens fans don't care all that much at this point.

Just my $0.02.
