For the most part, I think that Dead Man's Chest was terrific escapism as films go. The cast of the movie was excellent as per the previous film, but to be honest, I felt that Johnny Depp overdid the mincing pirate bit in this one. Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom were superb as always, and the scenes with Keira Knightly and Johnny Depp sizzled in some respects. She has really blossomed as an actress, and the film reflects this very nicely. The characters continue to be complex and somewhat unpredictable, but I think that is one of the factors that gave the first movie its charm, and I was glad to see that trend continue in this one. Even if some of the unpredictability becomes predictable.
While the movie was pretty creepy, the plot of Dead Man's Chest was complex and full of intrigue, as was the first movie, but I felt that the story tried too hard in a few places, and had some of the bad guys just a tad too dumb for my taste. The fact that the heroes are not always virtuous while the villains are sometimes sympathetic is a trend that this film continued to explore, and there were several genuine surprises (which I won't spoil for anyone). Needless to say, the special effects, the art montages, the costumes, and the stuntwork were simply spectacular, but to be honest, it left me thinking, "Is that all there is to this film?" when it was all over.
SteveB told me that he really liked the movie, despite some of the flaws that he found with it, while Kathy said that she thought Johnny Depp was better in the first movie than in this one, but that she found the film too creepy for her taste. I have to agree with that sentiment for sure, and I think that despite my mixed feelings about the film, I can't wait for the third movie to come out.
Anyone else seen the movie? If so, what did you think?
