Just been surfing the net a bit, and saw an interesting piece on Primeval over on the Den of Geek site.

The 10 Things We'd Like to See From Primeval in 2012

Be warned there's a few spoilers for Series 5 (if you haven't seen it yet), but there are some interesting comments and observations about the tv series as well as some nice ideas for what Primeval could go forward with. I rather like the idea of a few more novels, and would like to see some more stuff about Ethan, as well as the future of the ARC, given the events at the end of Series 5.

Rex is safe while Adrian Hodges is still involved. Adrian won't let Tim kill any pets off. *g* Thank goodness! I can't bear anything where pets get killed. One of my few squicks.

I'm glad that Rex is safe, Linda, though to be honest, I wish they would do something interesting with Sid and Nancy. Why haven't they bred yet? :)
Jan. 5th, 2012 07:52 pm (UTC)
The truth is that they just didn't have a big enough CGI budget to have Sid and Nancy as well.

I kind of figured that was the case, to be honest. Sometimes I'm surprised on how little (in a relative sense) money Primeval is made, especially after watching Terra Nova and all.

The real question is how you tell the difference between Sid and Nancy (especially considering the poop-less and gender-less state of the CGI. :)

LOL, you aren't allowed to put arses on them so anything else would be out of teh question.

having been watching terra Nova recemtly I've been very disappointed and really can't imagine how they managed to eat up that much dosh. The setting seems almost wholly incidental to the plot. Exactly the same story lines could be played out on a spaceship or anywhere else for that matter. They make almost nothing of the cretaceous setting or teh dinos. It's such a shame. And a total waste!

Well, without the arses and stuff, going to mislead a whole new generation of kids about the real physiology of prehistoric creatures. LOL

As for Terra Nova well... The series has a very interesting premise that, I think, could have been handled in so many ways (the Primeval RPG would be interesting to use to play a game based on it), but I actually was really interested in a second season of the show based on the outcome of the final season episode. That said, yeah, the Cretaceous setting and the dinosaurs are secondary to the plot, and at times, the dinos have actually been...a waste of budget.

I would definitely have to agree with you that the first two are things that definitely need to happen. Like you said, gimmes if you're a series fan. The third one is a kind of obvious, as well as the sixth, because I really didn't like the way the Ethan plot was resolved so quickly in Series 4 to some degree. For me, the rest don't really bother me, although the last one about marketing is one that the folks at ITV really should address.

As for your own suggestions, the one I really would like to see is the third one. Other than the business with the Sir William in Episode 2.7 and the stuff with the Victorians, I find it strange that more Anomalies haven't opened where people from other cultures come through, and what about those to the future?
Jan. 5th, 2012 07:54 pm (UTC)
I would like to see more of the future world.

Anomalies to the past and other cultures always bring the inevitable language problems which I find very hard to handwave away.

Frankly, I find it amazing that this hasn't happened more often. And I've always wondered why there isn't a translator type character around at the ARC just in case such a thing happens.

As for the future world, I agree... but which one? While there's always the concern over the temporal damage done in the past, I think it's interesting that there's no concern over the future of mankind as a whole per se, other than in the manner the plots with Helen and Matt and all that had dealt with. Which future is really ours, at least in the series, is a question that needs answering at some point. Imho.
Jan. 5th, 2012 08:39 pm (UTC)
Well, I think they did comment in teh interview that there is more than one possible future.
Jan. 6th, 2012 03:44 pm (UTC)
Which interview is this? (I suspect I've missed more than my share of interviews with the creators of the series over the years.)
Jan. 6th, 2012 03:50 pm (UTC)
The one I did with Tim and Adrian in Nov 2010.
Jan. 6th, 2012 04:04 pm (UTC)
I think I read the transcript of that one. Mind Like A Sieve (MLAS(tm)). :)

My only problem with this idea is that if one of our characters walks through an Anomaly, does this mean that it could be a future where Nick Cutter didn't die? (The whole idea of multiple possible futures is one that is headache inducing.)
Jan. 6th, 2012 04:18 pm (UTC)
That's an interesting plot idea!
Jan. 6th, 2012 04:34 pm (UTC)
Yes, yes it is. :)

One of the things I'm looking forward to in the Primeval RPG is the ability to run a game in any alternate version of the Primevalverse that one could desire.

I think you've just described the Denial playground there. A comm where you never have to describe a world where characters survived as AU.
Jan. 6th, 2012 05:33 pm (UTC)
While that's true, the fic on Denial has a lot of adult content to it, and wishful sexual thinking on the part of the writers that I-- Never mind. To each their own. I just want to see folks write Primeval fiction that deals with the creatures and the like as well, but can't sort through all the fiction out there to find this stuff.

There's stacks of gen on there as well.

My own series has as much creature based plot and action as it does slash, it's just that I prefer to work with that as a background because that's what I like to read. As a friend of mine often describes it, slashy gen.

If you want good Primeval gen, then you should read the two Virtual series we've done in Denial: VS3 and VS4 (there are tags for both). They are novel length series, gen, action/creature adventure, rated at about the same level as the show. Each episode is around 10 - 15k in length and there were around 10 episodes in each.

If you wanted to read more of that sort of gen I'm sure folks would give you some recs if you asked on the comm.

Thanks for the thoughts and advice on this subject. To be honest, I may do something about this down the road, but for the moment, there's just too much stuff on my plate to spend a lot of time reading on-line. The VS3 and VS4 stuff does sound interesting, though... :)

I just can't go to a big event yet. I'd be so stressed that I wouldn't have fun.

hehe It's the second book in the series about Zoey, but to be honest, I found the humour in this second book a bit too much for my taste. That said, absolutely crazy stuff happens in this one (not…

Of course you do! :) Heck, *I* want one! :)

I really do want to run Vaesen - Nordic Horror Roleplaying. The Friday night group will play the game, but on Sundays, I don't know how to convince…
