Conventions - Vacations or Not?

I've been reading the convention reports and personal views of Gen Con Indy 2007, and have wondered something...

The majority of folks who have posted about the convention have said that they had a great time, and enjoyed the experience and all. However, no one talks aboutt he more stressful aspects of convention going, and some of the down sides to attendance at conventions. From my own experience, I have found that, contrary to popular belief, science fiction and fantasy conventions and gaming conventions are a lot of work and stress for the con-goer, just as much as for the folks who actually work the convention. People who have never been to a science fiction/fantasy or gaming conventions seem to think that these things are like going on a "weekend vacation" or some such, where one rests and relaxes.

So I'm curious what my LJ friends and other folks think of this particular subject. So share your thoughts on this subject, and let's see what kind of thoughts the folks out there have on the subject.
