Space: 1999 to Return in Re-imagined Show?

Just poking around in the various news media for science fiction stuff, and came across this.

ITV Studios America and HDFilms are in the works to re-make Space: 1999, the iconic(?) series that featured Martin Landau and Barbara Bain. Imaginatively called Space: 2099, it is going to be a "contemporary re-imagining" of the show. I really do hope that some updated version of the Eagles. Anyway, here's the story from The Register.

Viktor:

I caught only bits and pieces of Space Precinct, as it didn't air on a station that I got regularly at the time, so can't really comment. My favourite sf cop show, per se, was the UK's Star Cops, and that didn't last all that long. *sigh*

Defying Gravity is one of my vices. It was a really good show in terms of the premise, and the potential was there, but the mystical angle was a huge mistake in a show that wasn't emphasising the sf aspects (given the network it aired on and the folks who made it) to all intents and purposes. The team's mission could have been interesting in an sf type of way if they had gone that route, but for me, the interpersonal relationships was a rather good part of the show.

No argument here about your comments on Stargate SG-1. :)

*sigh*

I tweeted that last week and my first thinking was WTF?

Maybe they should remake UFO too.

You didn't know that there was already a movie remake in the works for that series, right?

Umm, Hub, they *are* remaking U.F.O.! :) A movie, at any rate.

Should we be worried that it's the same guys who redid V? Also, yeah the Eagles were cool. :-)

Yes, we should be worried that it's by the same guys who remade V. :( The real problem with the remake of that show was the fact that they tried to make it too intellectual, and much less about the themes that made the original V mini-series so good at the time.

And yes, the Eagles were tres cool. :)

Um. It could work, but the look and feel of the original was so unique, so iconic that it's going to be very difficult to get anything that captures the sheer visual excess of that show.

As the re-imagined Battlestar franchise shows, it can be done and done well, but as the new Prisoner shows, it can be done abysmally.

I would have thought Blakes 7 would have been a better bet for "Battlestarring", make it grim and gritty, explore the very thin line between freedom fighter and terrorist, leave people in two minds as to whether the Federation was actually right to clamp down on Blake and his movement. Be very topical at the moment...

I agree with you that the series had a unique look to it, but I suspect that the re-make of the show isn't going to go for the same look in some ways, since they would be impossible to duplicate, and that wouldn't make Space: 2099 its own show. Sure, they'll use some of the basics (and the Eagles better be one of them!) somewhat re-designed, but that series was originally about the people, not the technology and stuff, and... Anyway, we'll see what we shall see.

Not going to comment on a re-make of Blake's 7. I don't think that remaking that show would do it justice. Not the way that dark and grim sf comes across these days.

I'm digging the early fall temperatures. I know we've got a heatwave or two to go still but this is a nice start to the month.

hehe It's the second book in the series about Zoey, but to be honest, I found the humour in this second book a bit too much for my taste. That said, absolutely crazy stuff happens in this one (not…
