TV Series Complaint

I was going to post a blog entry about my thoughts regarding the new Bionic Woman series, but viktor_haag beat me to the punch with this journal entry that pretty much sums up my feelings about the new series. I read a blurb or saw something on television with Lindsey Wagner, the original Bionic Woman, saying that she didn't like the new show because of the dark, angsty, plot-twisted nature of the new series, and I agree with her.

I think that my feelings about the new Bionic Woman series are pretty much how I feel about most dramatic sf television series these days. TV dramas are very dark, with continuing (often twisting) plotlines, a dystopian or cyberpunkish approach to life and the world, and a protagonist who is more anti-hero than hero, and is more likely than not dealing with dark secrets of their own and so forth.

Truth comes to shove, I would rather watch Private Practice, the Grey's Anatomy spinoff, rather than Bionic Woman after catching three episodes of the latter on videotape. Life is stressful enough without having to deal with some of the dark, angsty shows on tv these days, and a bit of lighter fare or relief is always welcome.

That's all I got for today.

I'll take the new Bionic Woman over the much lighter Flash Gordon any day.

Bionic Woman isn't what I'd call great, but it's watchable at least.

I haven't seen the new Flash Gordon series, but from what I've heard it's...pretty bad.

That said, Bionic Woman isn't watchable as far as I'm concerned. The series takes itself too seriously, none of the characters are likeable, and Alias did the conspiracy stuff like what we've got in BW far better.

So, you don't like the new Who?

Honestly, no.

While the new Doctor Who series has had a couple of excellent episodes, such as "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "Blink", overall it's been pretty forgettable. I can understand why RTD felt that the series had to be "upgraded" for the current audience and all, but the writing for the most part is poor, I won't even discuss the characterisation of the Doctor, and there's...ah, never mind. Don't get me started.

I've been watching Torchwood on tape, and Captain Jack is much more likeable here than he was on DW. The storyline and the plots have reminded me of Charles Stross's series with The Atrocity Archives and The Jennifer Morgue in style and feel, and seem more "personal" type stories, rather than focusing on the big picture.
May or may not continue to watch it, but I'll see how I feel...and videotape is the way to go with that one. Better things to do with my Friday nights, so... :)

I agree with you insofar as the characterisation of Captain Jack by John Barrowman is not perfect, but the character is becoming understandable in terms of his motivations and some of his personality as Torchwood goes on. I found hin unbearable in Doctor Who, but that may be because all of the acting in that has been over-the-top.

The other characters in Torchwood are an interesting group of personalities, but the lead played by Eve Myles is very good, and quite interesting to watch. As the newcomer to Torchwood, she's the viewer character so to speak, and has been quite interesting to this point. The series also has some interesting aspects that makes me think of the a|state rpg, which is also a good thing. :)
